Tower Hill House is really close to a great many attractions - for example the Great Ocean Road and 12 Apostles, the Grampians and Coonawarra vineyards are each a pleasant, leisurely and short day trip.

On our doorstep are deserted beaches, as well as the fun and heritage of Port Fairy and Warrnambool - not forgetting the shops, award winning restaurants, Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village etc - and you can walk directly from the garden into the extraordinary Tower Hill Nature Reserve.

Whether you stay at Tower hill House for a couple of days or a couple of weeks, your holiday will be as relaxing as it is fun!

Tower Hill Nature Reserve

Though there is direct access to the reserve from our garden, you can also take the scenic drive through. The Tower Hill Nature Reserve is nestled inside an extinct volcano and is a beautiful haven for all sorts of wildlife. There, you will probably see kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, emus, and many species of waterbirds.

Tower Hill is also great for bushwalking and picnics (BBQs & facilities provided). Guided day and night tours can be booked at the Tower Hill Natural History Centre (T 03 5565 9202), which is open daily. Tower Hill was created some 25,000 years ago in a violent volcanic eruption. The force of the blast created a funnel shaped crater, which was later filled by a lake and island.

Note the fantastic position of Tower Hill House on this map!

There are five self-guided walks, each with a different theme:

PEAK CLIMB: Orientation and geology – 20 minutes return, steep.

LAVA TONGUE BOARDWALK: Wetlands – 30 minutes, easy.

HAT ISLAND HABITAT TRACK: Revegetation – 45 minutes, easy.

WHURRONG WALK: Aboriginal foods – 1 hour, easy.

JOURNEY TO THE LAST VOLCANO: Geology – 1 hour, moderate.

(All walks start from the information centre/ picnic area, except for the Whurrong Walk, which starts near the bird hide.)

On a walk you could well see possums, echidnas, cape barren geese and wedge-tailed eagles - Australia's largest bird of prey. Keen twitchers might also spot chestnut teal, musk duck and spoonbills from the boardwalks and bird hide.  Eagles often soar at dusk.
